Measles — monitor · elevated

2,371 confirmed U.S. cases in 2026, roughly 94% outbreak-associated.

Outbreak-associated means spread is clustered rather than scattered. For comparison, all of 2025 recorded 2,289 — this is the largest U.S. measles year in thirty-five years. The trajectory, not today’s count, is why child-serving programs should have exposure procedures ready now.

  • CDC leadership. A new director was confirmed on August 5, during multiple concurrent health investigations. Track transparency, data publication and outbreak response rather than partisan framing.
  • Ebola (Bundibugyo). An approximately 80-person human trial of an experimental vaccine has begun. Report it accurately: starting a trial is a milestone, not established protection. The outbreak had reached 3,748 cases and 1,657 deaths as of August 1.
  • Foodborne investigations. Multiple active.

  • Salsa and guacamole — jalapeños linked to Salmonella, 345 cases across 27 states.
  • Whole jalapeños — Sinaloa-sourced peppers implicated.
If you run a child-serving program or event
  • Monitor local notices. Your county or state health department — not national headlines — is the signal that matters for your venue.
  • Keep an exposure-notification procedure. Know in advance how you would tell families if a case is linked to your event, and who sends it.
  • Have a referral path. Point families to their clinician or local health department. Don’t improvise medical advice.
  • Note it in run-of-show. Add a one-line health check to the ops checklist for any gathering.
